KZA360 Conservation Biology and Wildlife Management


Co-ordinator: Prof Mark Hindell, with Dr Chris Burridge, Dr Erik Wapstra, School of Zoology staff and guest lecturers.
Offered in Semester 2.

This unit covers the theoretical basis of conservation biology and wildlife management, linked with practical experience in field techniques.
Topics covered in lectures include:

  • Biodiversity assessment and conservation priorities
  • Population genetics and ecology
  • Managing threats to rare species from habitat loss, introduced species, overexploitation, secondary extinctions and climate change
  • Sustainable use of wildlife
  • Managing overabundant species
  • Ecosystem and landscape perspectives.
You will learn and apply methods to estimate population size and demographic parameters, coupled with an introduction to population modelling techniques.
