Marine Ecology

Phd Students in dive boatWe have an impressive array of state-of-the art research equipment and technology for marine science. The marine group in the School is an important component of the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI).

Projects are largely concerned with whole animals in the marine environment and include the population biology of marine mammals, birds, fish (including sea horses), and invertebrates; patterns of biodiversity; zooplankton ecology including social behaviours; invasion and impacts of exotic marine species; the dynamics of kelp-bed communities; marine conservation issues including by-catch; and theoretical aspects of marine systems including spatial-self organising, predictive models of benthic community dynamics, and characteristic scales of marine systems.

Prof. Craig Johnson

TAFI (The Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute) has strong links to the School of Zoolozy and offers a range of potential projects and scholarships in marine science available to Zoology students

Another partner and source for scholarships and support is the Joint CSIRO & UTas PhD Program in Quantitative Marine Science
