Diving and related facilities
The School is well equipped for subtidal research, and has a large amount of state-of-the art equipment for both SCUBA diving and surface-supply diving. Related equipment includes underwater still and video cameras, air lifts, lift bags, air-driven tools, compressors, etc.
The TAFI Marine Research Laboratory complex is located by the Derwent River in nearby Taroona. It comprises specialist chemical and biological laboratories and a major aquaculture facility with field equipment and boats to support a very wide variety of marine biological research activities.

There is a range of animal holding facilities adjacent to, or in, the building. Outdoor enclosures include caging for mammals, birds and lizards: a large bush enclosure is for free roaming macropods. Indoor facilities include the Lizard Rooms, and reverse daylight pens suitable for marsupials.
Aquarium Facilities
The School maintains marine and freshwater aquarium facilties for teaching research activities. As part of the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI), marine researchers in Zoology also have access to a multimillion dollar aquarium facility at the Marine Research Laboratories.
Marine ecology is a major area of activity in the School and, as part of the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI), we have access to a large fleet of power boats for this work.
