Arrow squid ecology

Contact: George.Jackson@utas.edu.au
This project aims at understanding both the growth dynamics of Australian arrow squid, its trophic role in the marine ecosystem and information to better manage the fishery for Nototodarus gouldi in Australian waters.

Ecological genetics of marine invertebrates

Contact: karen.miller@utas.edu.au
This program aims to understand the early life-history and ecology of marine invertebrates and to understand how ecological and evolutionary factors affect levels of genetic diversity specifically in isolated populations. Projects focus specifically on combining experimental and genetic studies to study larval behaviour and dispersal so as to understand connectivity in marine environments.

Marine Natural Products Chemistry

Contact: Adrian.Blackman@utas.edu.au
Tasmania's marine inshore waters have an abundance of seaweeds and certain types of sessile invertebrates like bryozoans, ascidians and sponges. We are interested in knowing what special (secondary) metabolites these organisms contain. We also investigate the bioactivity of the isolated compounds.

Multi-disciplinary research

Contact: R.Williams@utas.edu.au
The key in multi-disciplinary research is a close linkage with a non-ICT partner or topic with a real application problem, on which the project is based. The research is generally described as applied research, or may be strategic basic research. Examples include visualization of echoes from a multi-beam sonar, recognition of marine animals (such as fish, scallops) from video or camera images, providing pharmaceutical interaction advice, computing in education, etc. Read More....

Regional Marine Plans: Fisheries Management Challenges Under the Australian Oceans Policy

Contact: M.G.Haward@utas.edu.au
The project aims to identify critical issues in implementation of fisheries management within regional marine plans under Australia’s Oceans Policy. It will provide tools and approaches for conflict resolution in the implementation process and provide an inventory of instruments for managers responsible for implementation of fisheries within a regional marine planning framework.
