Young Tassie Scientists 2009
- taking science around the state, so you can find out what scientists really do!
The Young Tassie Scientists (YTS) program is about raising awareness of the range of career and study options available in science and engineering during National Science Week (NSWk) – and challenging the labcoat stereotype so often portrayed in the media.
YTS are dynamic and innovative early career researchers from diverse backgrounds, who can interest and inspire a range audiences with fascinating stories about their research and careers.
Topics in 2009 will include virtual reality, astronomy, how the brain works, how old are old growth forests, and regeneration after bushfires – with more to come...
During August, the YTS can visit your school for a 1 – 1.5 hr visit.
Each YTS presentation is about 20 - 30 mins, which may include demonstrations, hands-on or group activities and discussion time.
Presentations are designed to be as interactive as possible and can be delivered to middle primary, secondary or senior secondary classes. Presentations work best when delivered to class-sized groups (i.e. 20 – 30 students).
YTS presentations (20 – 30 mins) take the following format;
- sequential - i.e. one YTS presentation after the other in the same area to the same group, e.g. 2 YTS would present to one class only – this would be a one hour visit
- concurrent - i.e. multiple YTS set up in different areas, presentations run at the same time, then groups swap over, e.g. 3 YTS would present to three classes in three different rooms, then classes swap rooms so that they participate in all three presentations - this would be a 1.5 hr visit
- single - i.e. one YTS presentation in one area to one group, another YTS in a different area to a different group, e.g. 2 YTS would present to two separate classes – this would be a 30 min visit, suitable if you have limited time (only offered to schools within 1 hr travelling distance from UTAS campuses in Launceston or Hobart)
Usually the YTS will need a 20 min set up time and a 10 minute pack up time, and access to power is required at each venue.
Bookings for Young Tassie Scientists 2009 are now closed.
If you have made an online booking - confirmation will be emailed to you, including exact times of visit, which may need to fit in YTS travelling schedules. You will also be contacted a few days before the visit to confirm final details.
The YTS 2009 program is brought to you by National Science Week, University of Tasmania and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
