Higher Doctorates

Application process

Researchers who are interested in applying for a Higher Doctorate should write to the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology, to express their interest in being considered for the award. The letter should be accompanied by a:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Brief overview of the major contributions covered by the publications to be presented for examination
  • Detailed list of publications

This material will be considered by a committee to confirm whether or not a prima facie case exists for the application to be accepted.

If accepted, the researcher will be invited to submit a thesis consisting of the published papers and a preface highlighting the connection between the various research components and corresponding publications. There is no absolute requirement for the number of publications involved, as it is the overall quality of the work that is assessed, but, as a guide, DSc candidates in the past have submitted in the range of 60 to 100+ papers.

Honorary Degrees may be conferred by University Council ‘on people who, in the opinion of the Council, are distinguished visitors or outstanding scholars or who have given outstanding service to the Commonwealth, the State or the University'.
