Who are we?
The University Psychology Clinic at the University of Tasmania is maintained as part of the training program in clinical psychology, making the skills of clinical psychologists available to the community in a framework of training, supervision and research. The Clinic is staffed by a Clinic Director, who is a registered clinical psychologist, in conjunction with teaching staff in the clinical training program. Psychology postgraduate students (Psychology Interns), working towards Masters and Doctoral degrees undertake supervised casework with staff in the Clinic.

What do we do?
The Clinic is a training facility for postgraduate students to gain experience in the practice of clinical psychology. It provides short term psychological treatment for adults in the community. Clinical psychologists have specialist training in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of personal and interpersonal problems. Their aim is to help people overcome emotional difficulties and change their ways of feeling, thinking and behaving.

How much does it cost?
The University Psychology Clinic is a free service.

What are the Clinic hours?
The Clinic is open Monday to Wednesday from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

How do I make an appointment?
Appointments can be made by phoning the clinic on (03) 6226 2805.

If your GP or other health professional refers you, by telephone or in writing, we shall keep them advised of your progress.

What can I expect?
Confidentiality
The services offered at the Psychology Clinic are confidential. Whatever you discuss with your therapist is regarded as confidential within the Clinic. Psychology Interns may be observed by their supervisor or may observe their supervisor during a session. Therapy sessions may be recorded to assist discussion between therapist and supervisor but are then erased. Your case may be discussed, while maintaining your confidentiality, between Interns and their supervisors to provide you with the best possible care.

Information from discussions that you have with your therapist cannot be released to others outside the Clinic without your written permission. Your therapist will ask you to sign a "Release of Information " form in these instances. However, in the event that a therapist believes that their client is at risk of either harming themselves or others, it may be necessary to break confidentiality and advise another person. Whenever possible, your therapist would discuss with you their intention to breach confidentiality and who they would contact.

Written records made by your therapist are kept in a locked cabinet that is only accessible to Clinic staff who are bound by confidentiality. You have the right to see your file if you wish.

Your rights.
As a client you have the right to be treated with respect and to be actively involved in your treatment plan. You have the right to express your feelings and opinions and not be judged based upon them. You do not have to continue to see a therapist if you do not want to or you may request to see another therapist within the Clinic. You may also ask for a referral to another agency.

Your responsibilities.
As a client you have the responsibility to provide accurate information about yourself and to treat others at the Clinic with the respect that you wish for yourself.
If you cannot attend an appointment, please advise the Clinic at least 24 hours in advance.
