KPA161 Biology of Plants

KPA161A Koutoulis, J Weller, PJ Dalton (Coordinator)

Human dependence on green organisms encompasses a wide scope in the study of plant biology. This unit introduces students to the origin, diversity, structure and internal processes of plants. It covers topics including: fine structure of plant cells, organisation, structure, development and sexual reproduction in flowering plants. An understanding of how plants function will cover such processes as photosynthesis, water relations, nutrition and responses to environmental signals. A systematic survey of land plants (mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants), with emphasis on the origins, life-histories and evolutionary trends that have led to the successful colonisation of land.
