Genetics and Evolution is offered as a core second year unit for BBiotech, BMarSci, and BSc students majoring in Plant Science or Genetics. The unit integrates genetic and molecular approaches to understanding the development, function, evolution and utility of plants. The unit starts with a review of classical genetics and develops the themes of linkage, recombination, cytogenetics and quantitive genetics. We then move to a discussion of molecular genetics, including DNA analysis, and how these techniques can reveal evolution. Processes underlying the dramatic radiation of the angiosperms are explored. The final section of the unit presents an overview of plant biotechnologies, ranging from breeding and domestication, the use of natural plant products, to bioprospecting and genetic modification. An overview of algal diversity and evolution is included. The practical component of the unit is a mix of lab-based genetics experiments, excursions and an exploration of the diversity of flowering plants.
