Cosmic Ray Astronomy
The cosmic ray group has observatories and equipment located at Hobart, three other sites in Tasmania, and Mawson, Antarctica. The detectors formerly located at Darwin and Brisbane have been closed. The predecessors of some of these instruments commenced operation in 1956
and 1957 in time for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), and long data runs are now available. Two of the present sites are operated jointly with Shinshu University and Nagoya University in Japan. The group is also very closely associated with the cosmic ray program of the Australian Antarctic Division and is involved with a joint latitude survey program operated by the Bartol Research Institute of the University of Delaware.
