The School of Mathematics and Physics, in conjunction with the Australia Telescope National Facility of the CSIRO operates the Australian LBA (Long Baseline Array) as a national facility, available for projects from astronomers all over the world on a scientific peer review basis.
There is a long tradition of hands-on experience in radio astronomy within the school of mathematics and physics and the Ceduna observatory is operated both as a stand alone instrument and in conjunction with other antennas in a Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) array. This antenna dramatically enhance the Australian VLBI
array, which includes existing radio telescopes in Hobart and at Parkes, Mopra(near Coonabarabran) and Narrabri by providing a vital East-West extension required to map compact radio sources in the southern sky at high resolution and to study a range of important astrophysical problems.
