Career Summary
John Gibson originally trained as a laboratory-bound physical and inorganic chemist, but a visit to Antarctica in the late 1980s introduced him to the possibilities of research in the natural environment. Since completing his PhD on Antarctic inshore nutrient dynamics he has developed a strong polar research portfolio, with interests in palaeoecology (the origins of the Antarctic freshwater fauna and the effects and indicators of climate change), biodiversity (tardigrades, nematodes and rotifers), novel lake habitats and microbiology. More recently he has worked on Tasmanian estuaries as part of the CERF-funded Landscape Logic project, which aims to understand and predict the effects of land management decisions on riverine and estuarine health. He has published over 80 scientific papers on topics ranging from physical limnology to nematode taxonomy.
Research Interests
Estuarine ecology, biogeochemistry and history
Antarctic limnology, including palaeolimnology
