Pelagics Fishery

Monitoring and assessment of the Zone A small pelagics fishery

Data collected in the small pelagics catch sampling project is used to inform industry and management stakeholders as to current spatial and temporal patterns in catch and effort in the small pelagic fishery as part of assessment of the sustainability of the fishery.

Abalone Research

Abalone Research Group

The Tasmanian Abalone Fishery grew quickly from its inception in the early 1960’s and now supplies one of the State’s most valuable export industries. In 2004, the fishery produced a total of 2607.5 tonnes with a beach value of about $100 million.

The Institute is a joint venture between the Tasmanian Government and the University, combining aquatic research expertise in sustainable fisheries, sustainable aquaculture and natural resource management. The MRL is also responsible for the annual assessments upon which the management of all Tasmanian fisheries is based.
