Thesis title: Population dynamics of arrow squid (Nototodarus gouldi) from south eastern Australia.

Supervisors: Dr George Jackson (IASOS), Mr. Terry Walker (Director of Department of Primary Industries Queenscliff Centre, Victoria), Dr. David Smith (Theme Leader of Marine Ecosystems and Resources research at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research)

Prior to the commencement of his PhD, Corey had been employed by the Department of Primary Research Centre at Queenscliff in Victoria for around 12 years. Here, he was working at the Central Ageing Facility, which is Australia’s national fish ageing laboratory. He jumped at the opportunity to start a PhD through UTAS in an area that he has a high interest in.

Project Overview:

The aim of the project is to increase the understanding of arrow squid populations of south eastern Australia. Information gathered will complement existing data that has previously been used to aide the development of policies for the successful ongoing management of the fishery.

The arrow squid Nototodarus gouldi forms the primary catch of the Southern Squid Jig Fishery (SSJF). They are targeted by jig fishermen and caught as a bycatch to the trawl fishery. Over recent years, research has advanced; however, it highlighted the need for more detailed research concerning the effect environment conditions has on squid populations. As the SSJF encompasses waters of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania, the dynamic influence of their environment and oceanographic conditions is very important when studying population dynamics. All areas are subjected to measurable differences in temperature and productivity, both of which are thought to be extremely important in defining population characteristics.

Other areas that will be researched include identifying populations and cohorts by applying microchemistry and shape analysis techniques to their statoliths (balance bones), determining the selectivity of fishing gears (jig and trawl), and determining the effect climate change may have on future populations.

Interests: Apart from fisheries related interests, I also enjoy the art of fish taxidermy and of course the company of my wife and two kids.

Outstanding achievement: In April 2008 Corey received the Victorian Marine Science Consortium Postgraduate Award for 2008 for his current work on arrow Squid. The award was presented to him by the Victorian Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Gavin Jennings, as a part of the Victorian Coastal Awards of Excellence. Corey received a certificate plus $2,000.
