1983 – BSc(Hons) in Physics; 1989 – PhD in Climatology and Remote Sensing; 1987-1990 – scientist at DSTO in Adelaide; 1991 – appointed as Lecturer in Physical Sciences in IASOS; 1998 – appointed IASOS Honours and Postgraduate Coordinator; 2003 – Promoted to Senior Lecturer

Research Interests

Focussed on the physical properties of the Southern Ocean, in particular the area covered by seasonal sea ice – application of satellite-derived radiometer data to improve the description of sea ice characteriestics, including parameters such as: surface temperature, sea ice concentration and ocean colour – estimation of solar and UV radiation reaching the sea ice surface and penetrating into the underlying ocean. In association with biologists: assessment of the effects of UV radiation on Southern Ocean ecosystems, and investigating the foraging of penguins and seals in relation to oceanographic parameters. Research into the application of hydrogen energy systems in Antarctica.

Teaching

Coordinator of the Bachelor of Antarctic Studies with Honours program (also coordinates the Physical Sciences unit within that program). Undergraduate Physics – teaching basic oscillations and waves to first year physics students (and second year engineering students) – radiation physics to second/third year physics students. Undergraduate Geography – contributes to the third year unit Environmental Remote Sensing. Undergraduate Zoology – contributes to third-year unit Antarctic Ecology
