Andrew graduated from Sydney University with first class honours in Geology (1974). He completed his PhD at Macquarie University with a thesis on dinoflagellate cysts from the Northwest Shelf (WA).

Andrew holds the UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Chair in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Environmental Studies, established in June 2007. This is the only Cousteau-endorsed Chair in Australia and the only UNESCO Chair in Antarctic Studies in the world.

Research Interests

Andrew has active research projects in sea ice ecology and primary production, ice algal ecophysiology and Antarctic coastal zone primary production. He also works in both the Arctic and Antarctic on the effects of climate change on marine microbial communities and sea ice ecosystems.

He has active projects in Antarctic and Australian Holocene and Quaternary climate change geology. This mostly focuses on the application of microfossils, principally diatoms and dinoflagellates, to the interpretation of past environmental conditions. This work has led to ground breaking research in the investigation of the introduction of toxic algal taxa into Australia.

Teaching

Andrew teaches in the Life Science Program of the IASOS Honours course. He is also a major contributor to the third year units in Antarctic Ecology (Zoology) and Aquatic Botany (Plant Science).
