General Information The Master of Antarctic Science (MAntSc) is a specialised masters degree course in polar marine biology. It provides students with advanced instruction and training in emerging approaches and technologies in marine biology.
The course is designed to produce expertly trained scientists with international experience and research skills in the area of Antarctic marine science. MAntSc students will develop an understanding of the roles the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic marine ecosystem play in the global climate system. The MAntSc was developed as part of the new International Antarctic Institute (IAI) and the UNESCO/Cousteau Ecotechnie Chair in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Environmental Sciences. The IAI is a multi-disciplinary consortium of international universities. MAntSc students are able to cross-credit study programs and may choose to take electives available at one of the twenty partner universities as well as undertake their research project in association with an IAI partner. |
Course Structure This course takes 18 months full time to complete. CORE
The Antarctic Environment Designed to give students an understanding of the historical, geographic and political background of Antarctica. It also includes an introduction to the scientific processes within the biological, physical and chemical environments of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean.
Project Design and Analysis Designed to introduce students to the concept of quantitative analysis. Students will learn aspects of collecting, processing, analysing and presenting quantitative information, in the context of Antarctic science.
Field Study/Written Report The scope of the field study is dependant on opportunities and logistic support at the time of offering.
The field study may involve either:
- participating in a Southern Ocean/Antarctic research voyage;
- working on an Antarctic/sub Antarctic or other high latitude field station; or
- undertaking a local field, laboratory or literature based project.
In most cases, the written report component will be strongly associated with the field study. The report will describe and analyse original research. ELECTIVES
Advanced Phytoplankton Methods Provides an introduction to the latest approaches and innovative technologies for investigating polar marine phytoplankton.
Marine Bio-telemetry Covers aspects of acoustic, radio and satellite telemetry along with archival tag technology. Specific examples will be drawn from satellite tracking of marine mammals and birds in the Southern Ocean. The acoustic telemetry component will include examples of continental scale tracking programs, such as the Pacific Ocean Shelf Tracking (POST) program and the Ocean Tracking Network.
Molecular Marine Ecology Explores the suite of molecular tools available to biologists to investigate the biology, evolution, ecology and conservation of Antarctic marine organisms.
Southern Ocean Zooplankton Ecology Explores Antarctic zooplankton, including their biochemistry, physiology, habitats and spatial/temporal ecology. Applied fisheries management issues will also be examined.
Other elective units can be selected from existing postgraduate units at the University of Tasmania or approved units from other IAI universities.

FEES & FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Some Commonwealth supported places (HECS) are available for eligible Australian students. Also, in 2008 students who would be eligible for CentreLink payments for an undergraduate degree (e.g AusStudy, Youth Allowance) can apply for an equivalent university funded scholarship to do the MAntSc. From 2009 it is expected that eligible students will be able to apply directly to CentreLink for financial support.
