Dr Michael Lockwood is a natural resource social scientist, with expertise in protected area management, environmental evaluation, natural resource management and environmental planning. He is Deputy Head of School and coordinates the school’s postgraduate coursework programs.


Community Engagement

Michael serves on the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Advisory Council as well as the Sustainable Resources Research Committee of the CRC for Sustainable Tourism. He is an active member of the IUCN (World Conservation Union) World Commission on Protected Areas. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management and is a Corporate Member of the Planning Institute of Australia.


Research Interests

Michael’s research engages with four interrelated themes: understanding and documenting people’s values for nature; identifying best practice management for protected areas; understanding and improving environmental governance; and developing methods to inform environmental decision-making. Much of his work has been done in a multi-disciplinary context.

Michael currently supervises or co-supervises 9 PhD, Honours and Masters research students. He has published 3 books as well as articles in the leading international journals including Society & Natural Resources, Journal of Environmental Management, Journal of Environmental Planning & Management, Environmental Values, Environmental & Resource Economics, Ecological Economics, Environmental Ethics, Journal of Leisure Research and Journal of Environmental Economics & Management.

His current research projects include Pathways to Good Practice in Regional NRM Governance; Estimating the Economic, Social and Environmental Value of Tourism in Protected Areas; Connectivity Conservation in Mountain Ecosystems; and User Pays Systems in Protected Areas.

Teaching

Michael teaches the undergraduate unit Environmental Management, as well as three postgraduate coursework units: Planning Theory, Process and Applications; Protected Area Management; and Planning Project.
