Dr David Wood graduated from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 1990 with a BE (Civil) Hons. After working as a Structural Engineer with the Queensland Government he commenced a PhD with QUT. He then developed a career as a Structural Engineer and has gained experience in heavy industry, site supervision, domestic structures and tensioned fabric structures. He joined the University of Southern Queensland in 2001, teaching structural engineering design and also undertook the role of Associate Head of Civil Engineering. He joined UTAS in July 2005.
