KEA230 Introduction to Geophysics & Computer Applications

Electromagnetic surveying practical on the university oval

This course provides an introduction to the techniques used in geophysical exploration, as well as a practical overview of the application of computer technology in the geosciences. KEA230 is taught by Drs M. J. Roach and J. E. Reid.

The geophysics component of KEA230 covers the fundamentals of exploration using magnetic, gravity, seismic, electrical and electromagnetic geophysical techniques, and involves a compulsory one-day excursion (held on a day decided by class consensus).

The computing component covers geological databases, geographic information systems, image processing, geostatistics and ore reserve calculations, and has a strong practical emphasis.

The course involves two lectures (one computing, one geophysics), and two two-hour practical sessions per week.

Assessment for the course is based on a final theory exam (50%), and the remainder by continuous assessment (four assignments handed in during semester, excursion report (10%), computing practical exam).
