This course consists of several components:

  • Hydrogeology

    • Introduction to the principles of groundwater storage, flow and recovery
    • Application of hydrological and geological principles to the exploration and utilisation of groundwater resources in Australia
    • Hydrogeological modelling
  • Environmental Geochemistry

    • Basic principles of aqueous geochemistry
    • pH buffering
    • redox processes in surface waters
    • Environmental impacts of mining
    • acid drainage monitoring and remediation techniques
  • Environmental Geophysics

    • Application of geophysical techniques (e.g., resistivity, electromagnetics, ground penetrating radar, etc.) to environmental issues such as saline groundwater and acid drainage
  • Excursion

    • A three day excursion to the West Coast of Tasmania will review the impact of mining at Mt Lyell on the receiving environment, and will examine the impact of mine wastes on the King and Queen River systems and other selected West coast localities. The excursion runs in the mid-semester break.
