Vacation Employment If you are planning a career as a professional geologist you should consider gaining work experience during the summer University breaks at the end of 1st year and/or 2nd year. This would usually mean working for an exploration company in western Tasmania or in mainland Australia. Even if you are not committed to a geology major, vac work is a great experience and well paid. The current buoyant mining and exploration industry means there are lots of opportunities out there. Although the School of Earth Sciences and CODES gets requests from companies seeking student geologists from time to time, the best way to get vacation work is to be pro-active and contact companies yourself. Summer is the main field season for exploration in Tasmania, but less so in northern Australia. I have a list of companies active in Tasmania appended to this notice. If you want to try further afield I would recommend the CODES sponsor companies as a starting point (be sure to point out that you are a student at UTas-CODES-School of Earth Sciences in your covering letter). If you really want to write dozens of letters, then I suggest you target larger mining companies listed on the ASX. You will need to act quickly on this, as most companies are planning their summer field activities now. Good luck Peter McGoldrick 10 September 2009 PS Don't forget that Uni starts a week early for geology students as you have field trip requirements for both 2nd and 3rd year units!
