Career Summary

Jocelyn McPhie is a Professor with a joint appointment in Volcanology at CODES and the School of Earth Sciences, UTAS. She received her undergraduate and Honours degree from Macquarie University, Sydney (1979), and PhD from the University of New England(1986). She then held a Fulbright Post-doctoral position at the University of Hawaii and University of Texas, USA, followed by a Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship at the Bureau of Mineral Resources (now Geoscience Australia). She joined CODES at UTAS in 1990, and was awarded an Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship to study in Germany 1992-1993. She leads CODES’ volcanology research and teaches volcanology and general geology in the School of Earth Sciences degree program. With CODES' and other colleagues, Jocelyn has also presented numerous professional short courses on volcanology. She is senior author of Volcanic Textures, a book published by CODES and used worldwide by students and geologists working in both modern and ancient volcanic successions. She is Vice-President of the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior and an Editor for the Bulletin of Volcanology.

Research Interests

Jocelyn has made a major contribution to physical volcanology through her research into submarine volcanic successions and textures in volcanic rocks. She also has wide experience in the volcanology of subaerial volcanic successions, including felsic successions composed of unusually voluminous lavas. Her applied research focusses on the volcanic setting and timing of ore deposits in volcanic successions, and on identifying links between volcanic and hydrothermal processes.
