Career Summary

Peter McGoldrick is a Senior Research Fellow at CODES and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Earth Sciences at UTAS. Since 1997 he has been part of the CODES executive committee. In 1999 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in the School of Earth Sciences where he teaches courses in geochemistry and sedimentology. He has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Melbourne where he worked as a Technical Officer in Read Keays’ Neutron Activation Laboratory before commencing a PhD under Reid studying the giant Mount Isa Cu-Pb-Zn orebodies. Following a two year postdoctoral stint at University of Tasmania in the mid-80s studying the Que River volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit, he spent three and half years in Kalgoorlie working for the Geological Survey of Western Australia. In 1991 he returned to UTAS to lead a research group investigating the northern Australian Proterozoic Zinc Belt. This project was supported by industry and the ARC, and ran until 1998. In 1999 Peter instigated a research project aimed at taking a new look at the famous African Copperbelt. The first stage of this project (ARC-AMIRA Project P544) focused on the Zambian part of the Copperbelt. It ran from 2000 to 2003 and was a collaboration with Murray Hitzman’s group at Colorado School of Mines. Work on the Congolese part of the African Copperbelt is continuing in ARC-AMIRA Project P872.

Research Interests

As well as sedimentary Cu and Zn-Pb deposits, Peter’s current research interests include the application of novel analytical techniques to problems of sedimentary ore genesis and better understanding the interplay of organisms and ore-forming environments during the Proterozoic.
