Career Summary
Bruce is currently the Head of the School of Earth Sciences at UTAS, and Deputy Director of CODES.
Bruce was born in Vancouver, Canada and obtained his BSc (1979) at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and a MSc (1983) and PhD (1987) from Dartmouth College, USA. His Masters research was on the metallic trace element geochemistry of volcanic gas from active volcanoes in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. His PhD thesis was on the geology and mineralogy of a silver-rich, epithermal vein deposit in Mexico. After a post-doc at Dartmouth investigating a lead-zinc deposit in Argentina he arrived in Tasmania in 1988 to undertake further postdoctoral research on the Hellyer deposit on the West Coast.
To date Bruce has supervised 23 Honours, 23 Masters and 16 PhD students and published over 60 refereed papers in international journals.
Research Interests
Bruce has extensive research experience in epithermal gold-silver deposits as well as modern seafloor systems and volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits. He has won awards for both his teaching and research at UTAS. In addition, Bruce has had several years of mineral exploration experience in the Yukon, and British Columbia, Canada.
