Career Summary

Garry Davidson completed his PhD at UTAS in 1989. His thesis involved a study of iron oxide Cu-Au mineralisation at Starra and Osborne in the Mount Isa Inlier. Between 1990 and 2002, Garry undertook post-doctoral work at UTAS. In this time he consolidated his interests in IOCG deposits, stable isotope interpretation, and modern and ancient seafloor hydrothermal activity. In 2002 he was appointed a Senior Lecturer jointly between CODES and the School of Earth Sciences, where his main lecturing areas are hydrogeology, sediment-hosted ore deposits, stable isotope science and IOCG deposit geology.

Research Interests

Garry has led or been involved in several large industry-ARC funded research projects since 1990. He was a team member of major past projects on IOCG and sediment-hosted Zn deposits, and recently lead a three-year study into stable and radiogenic isotope patterns around Cambrian volcanic hosted mineral deposits of western Tasmania. He is currently co-investigator on a project evaluating the application of the LA-ICPMS method to understanding of trace metal haloes in pyrite around ore deposits. In a second large study, Garry is co-investigator on an Australian Antarctic Division funded project to measure the magnetic properties of oceanic crust on Macquarie Island, and interpret them in terms of hydrothermal history. He is also co-investigator on several current grants evaluating the hydrogeology of environmentally sensitive areas, such as the Rosebery mine hinterland on Tasmania’s west coast.
