A wide range of major and trace elements can be analysed using the New Wave UP-213 Laser, sampling with a resolution of 8-110 microns. The sample chamber holds a 1" round epoxy mount, which usually contains a polished piece of rock sample, but pressed powder pellets and grain mounts of individual mineral phases can also be analysed. The standard NIST 612 is used as the primary standard for most silicate analyses, and STDGL2b-2 (an in-house lithium-borate fused disc of pyrite and sphalerite doped with a wide range of elements) is used for sulphides.
