Kara Johns

Since escaping the Northwest coast of Tassie after completing year 12 at Marist Regional College (2002), the grand plan was to study psychology through a science degree. In first year at uni, chemistry was chosen because I needed a fourth subject! This unpassionate decision ended up evolving into obtaining two majors at the end of my degree: psychology and chemistry.

Over the summer of 2004/2005 I received a scholarship to work on a project with CSIRO marine research, developing an analytical method for determining cobalt in the ocean. On completion of this, I began honours in 2005 where I spent the year working on polymer monoliths (or should I say arguing with??!) for their application within therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM).

As my main interest was more within the area of TMD of anti-psychotics and improving the current experience patients receive whilst on this medication, I explored the options for working more specifically within this area for a PhD.

On return from 10 weeks working on board the Aurora Australis in Antarctic waters as a hydrochemist, I began my PhD. With joint supervision from the schools of Chemistry and Psychology, I am now well into a project involving the improvement of analytical methodologies and applications of TDM of anti-psychotics. So far, so good!!
