PhD (General)

.

I grew up in Kingston, south of Hobart, and graduated from The Hutchins School in 2000. I went on an exchange year to Argentina and began studying chemistry and biochemistry at the National University of Central Buenos Aires (the only courses on offer other than teaching and engineering).

When I got back I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to study science. However, the easiest decision was to continue, so I graduated with a BSc with majors in chemistry and biochemistry in 2004. Despite being strongly interested in molecular biology, I chose to do honours in chemistry because I felt confident about a project that was offered to me by Dr Emily Hilder and Dr Michael Breadmore.

I am now studying towards a PhD in the field of separation science with these supervisors within the School of Chemistry and ACROSS. At this stage the proposed title is “New materials and techniques for integrated microscale bioanalytical devices”.

I find analytical separation science to be an interesting field because it involves fascinating science concepts. Despite this, the work is highly relevant to widespread potential applications.
