Dr. Gardiner obtained B.Sc.(Hons.) and Ph.D. degrees from Griffith University. He then undertook postdoctoral research at Monash University, the Technical University of Munich and the University of Sydney before moving to the University of Tasmania as Lecturer during 2000 in the School of Chemistry.
Research Interests
The goal of our research is to obtain an improved understanding of organometallic reagents, or make new and better ones, for their contemporary applications in different arenas: catalysis, synthesis and materials. The projects involve various molecular design research strategies, either close to the “pure” synthetic end or towards the “application” end of the research continuum. The research plan places an importance on an integrated picture for structural investigations (solution, solid state, computed) of newly synthesised compounds leading to their better overall understanding and applied usage. Teaching
My teaching interests are in the areas of inorganic and organic chemistry, spanning topics within these ranging from physical to synthetic chemistry. Current courses include chemical kinetics (1st yr), inorganic coordination chemistry (1st & 2nd yr) and main group organometallics (2nd yr), organometallics in catalysis, symmetry and advanced inorganic spectroscopy techniques (3rd yr) and supramolecular chemistry (honours yr). Laboratory courses are taught in conjunction with all of these courses.
