Andrew Bowie graduated from University of Plymouth in 1999 with a PhD in marine analytical chemistry. He moved to UTAS in 2001 on an ARC early-career researcher fellowship. His research is supported by the ARC, the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems CRC and several international collaborative grants.

Research Interests

Research lies in the general fields of environmental analytical chemistry and chemical oceanography, with a specific emphasis on the biogeochemical cycling and speciation of trace elements in natural waters. Particular interests include the development of flow injection and separation science methods for trace species preconcentration/matrix removal and flow-though detection systems to suit reaction chemistries/analytes of interest. A strong aspect of his work is the role of trace metals (principally iron) in controlling the primary productivity of the Southern Ocean, and in the development of speciation methods to investigate sources and sinks for trace metals in seawater and micronutrient-phytoplankton interactions in aquatic environments.
