Why did you choose a science degree?

There were many possible options available to a student studying science, particularly when I wasn’t sure on the path I wanted to take until my second year in my undergraduate degree. I have always been interested in all areas of science and it was a pretty easy choice.

Did you have any experience of aquaculture before coming to the School? If you were taught the subject as part of high school please include the name of your school (or as many details as you can remember).

Yes. In my undergraduate degree there was a fisheries and aquaculture topic that I took as an elective. The course was held at SARDI in Adelaide

Why did you choose to study Aquaculture? Why study at the School of Aquaculture?

After completing undergraduate studies I felt as though I needed to become more specialised in a particular area and I knew that aquaculture was an industry that was developing well in Australia. I chose the School of Aquaculture because I had heard such good reports about the subjects taught and the staff involved. I was told it was the best place to study aquaculture

What do you do now?

I am currently employed as the research assistant for Paspaley Pearls in Darwin N.T.

What is the best part of your job?

I love all aspects of my job from implementing trials and collecting data from numerous remote locations in NT and WA on the farm sites.

What was the best part of your degree? (the place, a particular unit, social activities?)

Apart from the obvious social activities associated with uni life the best part of my degree was the satisfaction felt on the completion of my thesis.

In what ways did your degree prepare you for your current job?

I think my studies prepared me for my current job in just about every way possible. It gave me the background knowledge of most aspects of the aquaculture industry as well as preparing me for the research based side of things such as using equipment, planning and conducting experiments and collecting and reporting data within a given time frame.

Were you able to pursue your hobbies whilst studying at the School of Aquaculture? (Please give details e.g. member of University dive club/ mountaineering association etc)

Yes. I played netball in the uni competition while studying at the uni.

What for you was the best thing about studying at the School/ Uni of Tasmania/ in Launceston ?

Apart from meeting my husband, the great friends made while getting the necessary skills to pursue my career goals has made studying at the University a fantastic experience.

Why would you recommend the School of Aquaculture?

I would strongly recommend the School of Aquaculture to anyone who is interested in aquaculture, the staff are fantastic and the subjects taught provide a great base to begin a rewarding career

Why would you recommend a career in Aquaculture?

I have found the industry to be both challenging and very rewarding as there is such a wide range of possibilities in terms of species to culture and positions available. I have also been lucky enough to use my skills whilst travelling overseas working on a salmon farm in Scotland which was a fantastic experience
