Aquaculture Nutrition Laboratory

Launceston Campus, Science Building,

Pressed pellets for different fish sizes & species can be made in the Feed Production Room using the California Pellet Mill or feeds for abalone & crustaceans produced using a commercial grade pasta machine. There is also hammer mill & more specialised grinding equipment for initial processing of ingredients such as grains & legumes.

Several Tank Systems are used. The largest consists of 24 conical 360 litre tanks for rainbow trout & Atlantic salmon held in a controlled environment room. Systems can be run on fresh or seawater. The tanks can be adapted to measure feed intake or collect faeces to measure digestibilty of feeds & ingredients. Other systems are used to investiagte the nutrition of Australian eels, greenback flounder or southern rock lobster. Both the eel and lobster systems can be adapted to make digestibility measurements.

The X-ray allows the feed intake of individual fish held in groups to measured & to investigate effects of feeding hierarchies or new ingredients.
