Report on Central Plateau Work

As the culmination of more than 20 years field research, Dr Jim Yates has submitted a 160-page report entitled “Pasture Development on the Central Plateau of Tasmania’. Major work was carried out at elevations of about 920 and 1030m, on both the dominant red-brown soil of the Plateau and the more productive black peaty soil on old marshland. The effect of fertilisers on the natural vegetation was studied, over 70 introduced grasses and legumes were assessed for persistence and production, and animal production from sown pasture was recorded. A small experiment at 1150m examined the use of introduced species for ground cover on a bare eroded area. Access to this report is available through the School of Agricultural Science.
