How do I know what to enrol in?

   1. Familiarise yourself with the rules of your degree

The course structure will outline what you must do to complete the requirements of the degree and the semesters units are offered. For combined degrees with law, the law requirements are the same for all degrees. To access the course structure on the on-line Course and Units database, please follow these steps:
          * Access the Course and Units database at www.utas.edu.au/courses
          * Select the link for Law
          * Select the link for the degree you are taking. For example Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (L3D/63C)
          * Select the tab for Structure and Schedule which appears directly under the heading of the degree
          * Click on the links under the Schedules (on the left) to view the core units, electives and cross-listed units (for law combined degrees)

   2. Completing your enrolment online

Continuing students will be emailed re-enrolment information for their current degree towards the end of September. Re- enrolments can be completed on-line through the eStudent Centre. Combined degree students eg BA-LLB, BBus-LLB should obtain enrolment advice from both faculties ie Law and Arts for BA-LLB.

New students will be sent an offer by email and in the post. The offer includes information about acceptance and enrolment. Please follow the instructions included with your offer. For more information please refer to the UTAS enrolments page at the eStudent Centre.

Online enrolments will be checked and approved electronically by Faculty staff before census date.

   3. Enrolment approval

Students who enrol online will have their enrolment checked and approved electronically by a Faculty Officer.  If you enrol using a paper enrolment form it must be checked, approved and signed by a Faculty Officer or the Sub Dean of Law before you lodge it at the Student Centre.

During enrolment approval the Sub Dean or Faculty officer will check that you:

  • are enrolled in the correct units;
  • are meeting your degree requirements;
  • have covered your law elective groups (if in final year); and
  • are on track to graduate at the date you have nominated.

You should regularly check the approval status of your enrolment on the eStudentCentre.  You should also check your email account as we will normally alert you to any enrolment problems via email.

  • Course Approval Status "NOT APPROVED"
If your enrolment course approval status shows as Not Approved you need to be pro-active and contact a Faculty Officer urgently to resolve any problems with your enrolment. You are advised to resolve enrolment issues as soon as they are detected, and you should be aware that Census Date for each semester is the last date to withdraw from a unit without financial penalty. Enrolment errors may result in unnecessary academic or financial penalties, and may also delay your graduation.

  • Course Approval Status "APPROVED"
 If all of the above details have been checked and there are no enrolment problems, the Faculty Officer will mark your Course Approval Status as "Approved" and you need take no further action. Any future amendments that you make to your enrolment will be subject to re-assessment by the Faculty office for course approval.

  • Course Approval Status "NOT YET APPROVED"
This message indicates that Faculty staff have not yet assessed your enrolment for course approval.  Check your course approval status regularly to ensure that your enrolment is approved prior to Census Date.  If Census Date is approaching and your enrolment has not been approved please contact a Faculty Officer immediately.

Combined degrees approvals

Combined degree students who enrol using a paper form will need to obtain overall course approval and a signature from the Faculty Officer for each component of the combined degree.  This will involve two faculties eg for BBus-LLB approval will be required from both the Business & Law faculties.  The same requirement applies to any paper enrolment variations.

Special approvals

      Required if a student is seeking:
         1. to enrol in an overload (ie more that 4 x 12.5 % units per semester)
         2. to enrol in LAW679 Supervised Research
         3. waiver of a prerequisite

Approval can be sought by emailing the Sub-Dean of Law or Faculty Executive Officer.

4. Mooting

All students are required to complete a moot in final year. You need to enrol in LAW407 Mooting in either Semester 1 or 2.
