The Mobile Skilled Workforce: Optimising Benefits for Rural Communities (Staff)Project Commencement: August 2008
Project Completion: August 2009
Project Summary
This project will investigate the question: how can rural communities capture maximum benefit from professional and other highly skilled workers in the context of an increasingly mobile and transitory workforce?
The project will deliver a report on the findings along with a workshop which will be delivered to community and economic development officers on development programs to access and utilise the skilled mobile workforce in their region. In addition, a number of case studies, journal articles and draft TV/radio documentary concept will be developed based on the findings.
Project Method
The project is exploratory, designed to identify the range of benefits that may flow to rural communities, and the nature of the community setting and policy influencing factors. It adopts a case study approach, focussing on two to six rural local government areas, most lokely including at least three, one from each of the Burnett region of Queensland, Northern Rivers region of NSW and northern Tasmania, to be selected in consultation with the reference group for having experience of mobile, highly skilled workers. The reference group is also a key part of the project communication strategy.
Project Team
Principal Reearcher is Associate Professor Sue Kilpatrick, from the University of Tasmania, Department of Rural Health in Launceston, Tasmania.
Assisting Associate Professor Kilpatrick will be Dr Peter Vitaras from the School of Commerce and Management at Southern Cross University in Queensland and Mr Martin Homisan from North Burnett.
