Pilot study on Overweight and Obesity (Staff)Project commencement date:February 2006
Project completion date:June 2006
The first stage of this study was funded internally through a UDRH research grant. It involved a literature review, the results of which strongly indicated that obesity is a serious health risk. It has been determined that although genetics plays a part in obesity, social and environmental factors are also significant causes.
The research was based on multilevel analysis of obesity prevalence, as very little research of this type had been conducted in Tasmania. The study aimed to examine obesity in terms of socio-economic characteristics and health-related lifestyles.
Any insights gained from research on the link between these factors and the prevalence of obesity are very useful for developing intervention strategies, health policies and health programs.
