GPNW Simon Monks Memorial Award for Excellence in General Practice


Overview

GPNW will again offer a $3,000 award to honour the memory of Dr Simon Monks and to acknowledge excellence in General Practice by a fourth/fifth year RCS medical student. Dr Monks was a highly respected partner in the East Devonport Medical Centre and a GPNW Board member who was actively involved in teaching and mentoring RCS students prior to his sudden and unexpected death in 2007. The Award is supported by Dr Monk’s family, and GPNW works with the RCS to select a recipient.

Eligibility

The award is based on RCS student skills and attributes demonstrated during attachments in General Practice in the North West region during the year. These include a high level of interest in the GP attachment and excellent communication and clinical skills in the general practice setting. Students must have a sound academic record in the MBBS program, be positively endorsed by RCS academic mentors and successfully complete the fifth year of the MBBS at the Rural Clinical School.

Students are nominated for the award by general practices involved in the RCS teaching program.
