Career Summary
Dr Arvier initially undertook a research Science degree at the University of Queensland before moving on to medical studies graduating in 1979. During his medical career, he worked mainly in rural and regional hospitals across Australia before settling in Tasmania in 1990 to pursue a career in emergency medicine.
In 2005, he moved to Canada with his family to work and pursue clinical and research interests in rural emergency medicine and complete a research Masters degree through the UDRH. On returning to Australia, he took up a position with the Rural Clinical School as well as continuing to work part time in the emergency departments of the North West Regional and Mersey Hospitals.
His research thesis, The Training and Education Needs of Emergency Medicine Doctors Working in Rural and Regional Australia, is particularly relevant to his work with medical students in their clinical years at the RCS and with junior doctors working in the North West Regional Hospital. Dr Arvier's thesis explored how employers, educators and administrators perceived the issues of emergency medicine workforce shortages and what solutions these groups suggested. He then surveyed 230 doctors from 57 rural and regional hospital emergency departments across Australia to determine the characteristics and future plans of the rural emergency medicine workforce.
