Dr Maskrey graduated from the University of Sheffield (BSc) and the University of Cambridge (PhD). He has been a member of the University since 1973, and an Associate Professor since 1996. He has spent extended periods of study leave overseas, including visits to Kenya, USA, Canada, UK and NZ

Research Interests

Dr Maskrey’s main research interests include the control of breathing and the control of body temperature, and interactions between these systems. Most of his studies have been carried out using various animal models including native, domestic and exotic species as well as ‘standard’ laboratory species. Recent work has involved the Zucker rat. Studies with human subjects have also been undertaken. Specific areas of interest include the ventilatory responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia. Another area of investigation is the body temperature set-point and how this is regulated. Research links are maintained with laboratories in the USA and Canada and with Australian mainland universities.

Teaching

Dr Maskrey is mainly involved in teaching in the first two years of the Medicine and Science courses and the first year of the Pharmacy course. His major areas of expertise lie in the teaching of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. These are dealt with from basic aspects of structure and function through to more advanced clinical aspects of cardiac and pulmonary pathophysiology. Dr. Maskrey is coordinator of the Physiology Honours programme.
