Appointed in November 2001 as Conjoint A/Professor and Consultant in Clinical Respiratory Science (University of Tasmania/Royal Hobart Hospital). Actively involved in respiratory science and physiology, mainly through the Australian & NZ Society of Respiratory Science and Thoracic Society Aust & NZ.

Research Interests

David Johns is the Coordinator of the Respiratory Research Group. His area of expertise is respiratory science with particular interest in respiratory physiology and instrumentation.
Current research includes:

  • Effect of diseases such as asthma on the structure and function of the lung airways;
  • Exercise-induced impairment of pulmonary gas transfer;
  • Role of informatics in detecting "hidden" patterns of lung function in health and disease; and
  • Effect of airway asymmetry on the non-uniformity of airway emptying and the measurement of airway distensibility.

    I welcome enquiries from potential collaborators and students.

    Research Areas:

    Teaching

    David Johns is actively involved in teaching at the under-graduate and post-graduate levels. His teaching material includes slides, interactive multimedia CD, journal articles and books.
