FUNDED BY THE ROYAL HOBART RESEARCH FOUNDATION Asthma is characterised by inflammation, scar tissue deposition and new blood vessel formation within the airway wall. Collectively these processes result in “remodelling” of the airway. We wish to investigate the links between these disease processes and assess how long-term inhaled corticosteroid affects them.

Asthma is a major burden to the Australian community, yet there are many gaps in our knowledge of the development and remission of asthma in adults. In 1968 1349 Tasmanian children with asthma and 7236 without were defined. We will study these children 35 yrs later to see how many children with asthma get better, and how many normal children subsequently developed asthma.

FUNDED BY ROYAL HOBART RESEARCH FOUNDATION The capacity of the lung for gas exchange is temporarily impaired following a bout of intense exercise. This study will determine if impairment is due to changes to the lung membrane or to the volume of blood perfusing it. This research has direct applications in sports science and clinical medicine.
