Research Interests
Dr Cooley’s doctoral work involved an experimental investigation of the theoretical basis of self-handicapping. He has three main current areas of research: self-handicapping behaviours of athletes; behavioural change associated with physical activity; and supervision of pre-service teachers. Dr Cooley consults to a wide number of organisations on topics related to health and wellness, and behaviour change. He currently holds a consultancy with a major electricity supplier to develop a behavioural safety program. Dr Cooley has written multiple refereed journal publications and abstracts and has made many academic conference presentations. He has conducted many presentations on the mental preparation of athletes and has done thousands of hours of service in the field of mental skills coaching of athletes, coaches, and organisations.
Teaching
Dr. Dean Cooley’s teaching expertise is in the psycho-social aspects of physical activity. He received his Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) from the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education, his Master of Education from University of Tasmania, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Human Movement from Victoria University. His area of specialty is the social psychology of sport and physical activity.
