Career Summary

Noel joined the CSL in 1979 as a Research Fellow in Mass Spectrometry, and was appointed Officer-in-Charge of both the Organic Mass Spectrometry and Vibrational Spectroscopy facilities in 1984. He has been associated exclusively with the Organic Mass Spectrometry facility since 1986. He was a Churchill Fellow in 1988 (visiting England and France), was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 1997, and received a National Citation award from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 2006. He was program chairman for the RACI's 11th Analytical Conference in 1991 and convened the 16th conference of ANZSMS in 1997. In 1994 he represented Australia at an ISO International Essential Oil meeting in Spain.
He has written or co-authored ~130 refereed papers, as well as ~100 national and international conference presentations. His 1990 review paper on gas chromatographic retention indices of terpenes has become the most cited paper by a Tasmanian author in any discipline since 1979 (with around 900 citations), is the second-most cited paper by a Tasmanian author and currently receives around 100 citations per year.

Noel has been the Tasmanian representative for the The Australian and New Zealand Society for Mass Spectrometry (ANZSMS) since 1983. He has served on the national executive of the Society from 1995-2004 and again since January 2009.
