New High Resolution ICP-MS now operational

A new latest generation ELEMENT 2 High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer has been installed in the Central Science Laboratory, replacing the original 14 year old ELEMENT 1 instrument.

Following installation in July the ELEMENT 2 has undergone a lengthy and detailed commissioning process. The new instrument will offer researchers interference free determination of many elements down to trace and ultra-trace levels (depending on blank and sample quality).

Dr Ashley Townsend, CSL Deputy Director and Research Fellow ICP-MS commented that “the new instrument offers superior detection capability and enhanced spectral resolution over our earlier instrument, which will be beneficial and have application in a broad cross section of UTAS research areas, namely environmental, chemical, health science, marine science, geological, Antarctic and agricultural fields”.

The acquisition of the ELEMENT 2 was supported through a successful ARC LIEF bid with major support from within the University along with key external stakeholders (AAD, CSIRO and ACE CRC).
