Hobart Campus, Chemistry Building, 248

The Kratos Concept high resolution instrument has a GC inlet, and is fitted with a variety of ionisation modes and direct probes as well as many data acquisition modes. The Finnigan LCQ is directly coupled to an HPLC, and has both APCI and electrospray ion sources. All three instruments are capable of acquiring tandem MS (MS/MS) data.
These instruments are used in solving a range of research issues in disciplines such as botany, forestry, agronomy, microbiology, marine chemistry, pharmacology, chemistry, environmental science,
immunology, and plant physiology; routine analyses are the exception rather that the rule. Typical applications include characterisation of synthetic compounds via low resolution spectra and accurate mass measurement (to 2 ppm accuracy), identification and quantitation of plant hormones at very low ppb levels, characterisation of natural products, microbial lipid analyses, identification and quantitation of tannins and other phenolics in plant extracts. Further applications include metabolic fate of drugs and other xenobiotics, antibiotics assays, essential oil analyses, characterisation and stability studies on Jack Jumper ant venom, identification and quantitation of plant pigments, pesticide residue determinations
in essential oils and plant extracts, and quality control in pyrethrum. Many mainland Universities and
external clients regularly use this facility. For more information contact:
