Career Summary
John’s first degree was in geography and was awarded by the University of Aberdeen in 1998. Since then, John has completed a PhD in the area of retail marketing and has held various academic posts at English universities. These have included a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship competitively awarded by the UK government’s Economic and Social Research Council. Immediately prior to joining the University of Tasmania, he was Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Manchester. He maintains his research and teaching links with the UK and is a Visiting Fellow at Manchester Business School. Within the School of Management, John holds several administrative roles, including that of Deputy Head of School. In addition, he holds the position of Graduate Research Coordinator and in this role oversees the School’s doctoral programme.
John has considerable consultancy experience, having undertaken projects for, amongst others, the National Retail Planning Forum, P&O Shopping Centres, the Tasmanian Ambulance Service, and various local authorities. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Higher Education Academy. John is Academic Editor of the Journal of Place Management and Development, a new journal which is published by Emerald.
Research Interests
Reflecting his academic background in geography and marketing, John’s research interests are concerned with the relationship between organisations and their environments. At a fundamental level, he is interested in how firms respond to and shape their external milieux. The context for much of this research is the retail sector and includes studies of locational planning, independent retailing and retail history. With Kim Lehman, he is also currently undertaking research into the museum marketing and management field. This project centres on corporate museums and is concerned with how companies use such facilities, and the collections therein, for marketing and other purposes.
Teaching
John’s teaching interests lie mainly in the area of marketing, especially retail marketing. He has extensive teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has taught on executive programmes for several major companies, including J Sainsbury and B&Q. John also teaches on the School’s transnational programme at Shanghai Ocean University. John has taught research methodology to both undergraduates and postgraduates. For his work in developing the teaching of research methods, he received the Faculty of Business Teaching Award in 2007. He has supervised several PhD, Masters and Honours students to successful completion.
