Career Summary

Prior to taking up a full time academic position, Kim had an extensive career in the tertiary education sector, most recently in business management. Throughout this time he also worked as a consultant on various marketing communication, Web content and design, and print media projects. Kim has a strong background in the arts and as a writer he has published both short stories and social commentary. He is currently on the management committee of the University of Tasmania’s NEW Gallery, a contemporary art space, and has recently presented at the School of Visual and Performing Arts’ ARTS FORUM series of public lectures. Kim continues to maintain contact with industry and is an Associate Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute and is a Certified Practicing Marketer.

Research Interests

Kim’s research interests focus on marketing strategies in the arts, museum and cultural sectors. A long standing interest in museums has fuelled a number of projects centered on the museum sector. Projects on public museums have involved research into the role of the public in museum management, the strategic use of electronic marketing in the sector, and a comparison between publically funded and private museums. With colleague John Byrom he has also been researching corporate museums within a number of organisations in Australia and the UK.

Kim’s recent research has been in the area of marketing the visual arts. In 2009 he commenced a research project investigating the nature of the private art museum in Australia, and their role in the marketing of the visual arts. This project links to ongoing research into the usefulness of the concepts of self marketing and branding for the individual artist - seeking to establish the extent to which artists understand marketing concepts, the extent to which they consider them useful, and the extent to which they put self marketing and personal branding strategies to use.

Teaching

Kim enjoys teaching, particularly the feeling of being part of the growth and development of students as they move through their studies. He believes that students benefit from his industry and business experience and the incorporation of his research into teaching practice.
