Unit Detail

BEA300 Microeconomic Theory and Policy

An investigation of some of the various institutional devices that channel self-interest to the public interest. The objective is to determine the conditions under which incentive, screening and summative mechanisms generate socially efficient outcomes. Situations in which the pursuit of self-interest is self-defeating, that is, yields outcomes that are not socially optimal, are also treated. The unit also provides an introduction to the basic concepts of taxation.
