BEA320 Macroeconomic Theory and Policy

Macroeconomic problems are widely but superficially discussed in media. This course aims to give the student the understanding of macroeconomic issues, which can only come from solid theoretical analysis. To meet this end BEA320 has been designed to enable students to appreciate explanations of macroeconomic phenomena by means of the equilibria of competitive markets composed of maximising persons. This part of the analysis is "neoclassical" in orientation. The course is also designed to extend students' understanding of the explanation of macroeconomic phenomena by way of market disequilibria rooted in irrationality or anti-competitive behaviour. This second sort of analysis is Keynesian in orientation.
